"Peacock Bass Catching Report
for April 1997"

Butterfly Peacock Bass

On Monday March 31, 1997, while scouting an area, Sam came across a "BIG" Butterfly Peacock Bass, the fish was in an area of heavy fishing traffic so he decided to see if he could get big boy to bite. After having the fish turn it's nose up at everything including the kitchen sink, Sam flipped a shiner under it's nose and that got the Peacock's attention in a hurry! A few seconds later it was "Let the Fun Begin". The fish came flying out of the water with flaired gills shaking, then back in the water for a drag burning run, there was no stopping this fish. Sam's medium action rod and twelve pound test mono were no match for this monster. Into the timber he quickly swam and that was "All she wrote" as the line parted and tears came to Sam's eyes. Based on Sam's estimate, (remember Sam sees plenty of peacock's daily) he believes this fish was well over "Eleven" pounds, and is easily a new World Record. Sam now has this Peacock's address and it is only a matter of time before this fish is caught. Who is going to land this monster, who knows it could be you!

April 20th - the day started slow with only ten Peacock Bass being caught between 7:30 and 9:30. A lot of fishermen would consider this to be a good days total catch, but for us this is a slow beginning. As the day wore on and the weather warmed up, so did the catching. The next seven hours brought over forty Peacock Bass ranging between one and a half and three pounds, with a few tipping the scale at almost four pounds. An added bonus of six Largemouth Bass rounded out the day's catch. Not a bad day when you consider that we had to deal with four straight days of heavy rain and a cold front that dropped the temperature by twenty degrees. The weather confused the Peacocks so bad that they would turn their nose up at live bait and they where laughing at any artificial thrown their way.

April 21st Once again we had what we consider a slow day, our clients could only boat thirty Peacock Bass all runnung between two and three pounds. We also kept catching those pesky largemouth bass, fifteen found their way to the boat all running in the two pound range. Our clients were happy with their days catch, but we still consider it a slow day.

April 22nd Catching picked up but so did the wind. The wind was blowing from 20 - 30 mph all day long (sure was tough on the batteries), but the catching turned out to be good. Forty-five to fifty Peacock's found their way to the boat, with the fish being anywhere from two to four pounds. For once the largemouth's had lockjaw ... YEA!!! Today was a run and gun day for catching the Peacock Bass, but over all it was a good day for our clients. Our clients ended their trip with having caught over one hundred and twenty Peacock Bass up to four and a half pounds, and also added twenty largemouth bass as a bonus. Will they be back ... without a doubt!!! How about you? That's the last report for April see you again in May.

Stay tune for May updates as they become available.
